DS SolidWorks provides me with a non-commercial license of SolidWorks Premium. They have also invited me to press events and conferences, such as SolidWorks World, free of charge and, at times, they have also provided for accomodations, some meals and transportation. I don't, however, receive any payment for blogging or instructions on what I should write about. Everything that I post in this blog is my own opinion and does not reflect or represent in any way the ideas of DS SolidWorks.

This hasn’t got much to do with SolidWorks, but a lot to do with women and engineering. It’s about the annual national conference for women in engineering, and that this year will take place from November 6th to 8th, in Baltimore, Maryland.  It looks like something I would like to experience, but unfortunately I will have to miss it this year. I had no idea that such an event took place, so I didn’t plan for it at all. Maybe next year.  In the meantime, spread the word among the women engineers that you know. And if you are one, consider attending. It looks like something really cool… and they even offer free childcare! For more information, take a look at this brief video clip or visit their website.

Sw2009pre

OK, I must admit that I’m not really an avid user of the Toolbox, but after seeing the “makeover” it went through for SW2009, I think I’ve changed my mind. Have you seen it? It’s so much easier to enable and configure now than it was before, and it even allows the users to create their own custom properties for the hardware in the toolbox! Clicking on the toolbox icon in the task pane, it reminds you in case you need to add or configure your toolbox.

Toolbox1

The toolbox configuration interface is really friendly and it guides you through the whole process in five easy steps.

Toolbox2

The very first step is to select your hardware. You get to choose what you want to keep of all that is available for you in the toolbox.

Toolbox3

After you’ve chosen your hardware, you get to customize the individual items.

Toolbox4

You can choose from standard properties, like size, length, thread display, etc.

Toolbox5

Or add your own custom properties into the mix.  Here I’m adding a short list of three possible SW materials for my fasteners.

Toolbox6

Next, you get to select user settings and permissions to access and modify the toolbox hardware. This is particularly useful if you have a group of users sharing the toolbox.

Toolbox7

Toolbox8

Section five, for configuring smart fasteners offers some neat options, as well. Besides defining the kind of fastener to be used for hole wizard and non-hole wizard holes, you can configure the Smart Fasteners length to automatically adjust according to your requirements, a certain number of threads beyond the nut or a multiple of the tapped hole diameter.

Toolbox9

I like this new way to configure the Toolbox. I think it’s easy and simple. What do you think? Do you like the Toolbox’s makeover?
